All of the names on the list of theorised targets were those of people either connected to Wealdstone, or Kristin herself. And all of them were now dead. Except for one.
âWhoâs Joshua Shaw?â Frank asked.
âAs far as I can tell, nobody. According to my sources, they havenât actually contacted him yet. Heâs a former internet streamer, lost a lot during the whole exploding town scenario, now works at a soup kitchen, and writes comic books. Nothing significant. No priors, no criminal record to speak of. Never even dropped a piece of litter.â
Frank went over the list once more.
âItâs almost as if they knew these people were going to die. Itâs very strange. But what are they up to? I mean nobody has even seen this asshole in over a decade. Why now?â
Frank could hear Beth now crunching some kind of food on the other end of the phone, and moved the device away from his ear slightly.
âNo idea. But they clearly have an agenda here. Frank, can I ask you something. And Iâm being deadly serious here.â
Frank paused as he raised his cup again.
âSure. Anything.â
Beth took a deep breath.
âDo you think any of this stuff is actually real? The werewolves attacking the Silverton District. The reports of mystical beings being involved in Wealdstoneâs decimation? What went down at Crossroads? Iâve seen things here, Frank. Things I canât explain. And I know you have seen things too.â
Frank lowered his cup. He had thought about some of the things he had dismissed as impossible. The clearly bogus news reports, and suggestions of gas explosions, and any other excuse feasible enough to cover up an underlying truth. He remembered the CCTV footage of Kristin and what she did in the store where they found her. Something happened to her.
âI donât know, Beth. Too much is happening in this world now. And Iâm out of ways to explain it. Something else has to be happening in these towns. And Doctor Verne is keeping something from me. Iâm gonna pay him a little visit, I think.â
Frank stood up, and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair. He grabbed his cup and poured the thick dark liquid out the open window into the grass on the other side.
âFrank, do me a favour. Thereâs a scientist I want you to take with you. She has only recently shown up on the radar. Probably because sheâs in Wealdstone, and we know how many things have happened there that we canât explain.â
Frank laughed sarcastically.
âYeah, you can say that again.â
âI know, but I think she might be able to help. Her name is Chantel Beaufoy. Sheâs got PhDs in Epidemiology, Molecular Medicine, Cybernetics, Genetics, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. If ever you need someone with their head screwed on to tell you if itâs science, or actual evil magic, sheâs probably the one.â
Frank glanced back up at the clock.
âAlright. Give her my number and tell her Iâll pick her up at Deannaâs Place in two hours.
